  1. While the Berlin wall is being built,
  2. American space endeavors in the 1950's were 
  3. largely preoccupied  with the build-up of a 
  4. nuclear arsenal of intercontinental ballistic 
  5. missiles (ICBM's), as well as the odd satellite.
  6.  
  7. The launch of Sputnik changed the pace of the 
  8. American space program, but still the Russians 
  9. were able to send the first man into orbit -- the 
  10. Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, on  April, 1961.
